BMX Cycling

BMX cycling is much different than most other cycling styles. BMX, or Bicycle Motorcross, is more akin to Supercross motorcycle racing than it is to road racing. The racing is almost exclusively done on a dirt track, and the tracks themselves are laden with jumps, turns and other obstacles.

BMX cycling requires a very specific type of bike in order to participate. The bikes are generally much smaller than road or mountain bikes, and are fairly lightweight as well. However, the bikes must also be strong enough to be able to withstand the abuse they receive during a typical race.

BMX cycling was first born during the 1970’s. The Schwinn Sting-ray of the era was the bike of choice, as no actual BMX bikes had been invented yet. The races were designed to mimic the off-road motorcycling racing circuit.
